Quotes to Consider:
John Calvin on Genesis 15:6: "... THAT ABRAM BELIEVED GOD,
and it was imputed to him for righteousness. Here we see a text plain
enough, and at the first sight not greatly to be stood upon, and yet the
Jews are so blockish [stupid] and blind, as that they know not what it
meaneth. And amongst Christians also, hardly shall we find one amongst
an hundred, which understandeth only the meaning of these words. For if
these three or four words were truly understood (THAT ABRAM BELIEVED,
and it was imputed unto him for righteousness) without doubt it would
overthrow the whole state of Popery: all superstitions which at this day
bear sway should cease: and all controversies now in dispute be
appeased. For this is the key which openeth whatsoever is requisite for
our salvation: this is the means to decide all controversies: this is
the foundation of all true religion: to be short, this is it that
setteth open the heavens unto us, if we can comprehend that which Moses
here in a word setteth down unto us" (Sermons
on Melchizedek & Abraham, p. 95).
James Montgomery Boice on
Genesis 15: "In the middle of this chapter occurs what is
perhaps the most important verse in the entire Bible: Genesis 15:6. In
it, the doctrine of justification by faith is set forth for the first
time. This is the first verse in the Bible explicitly to speak of (1)
‘faith,’ (2) ‘righteousness,’ and (3) ‘justification.’"
