Quotes to Consider

Church Order 23: "The office of the elders, in addition to what was said in Article 16 to be their duty in common with the minister of the Word, is to take heed that the ministers, together with their fellow-elders and the deacons, faithfully discharge their office, and both before and after the Lord’s Supper, as time and circumstances may demand, for the edification of the churches, to visit the families of the congregation, in order particularly to comfort and instruct the members, and also to exhort others in respect to the Christian religion."

Rev. James Slopsema: "The salvation we have in Jesus Christ does not automatically work itself out into a life of obedience. We are not puppets on a string that God manipulates externally. We are rational, moral, thinking, choosing creatures. For that reason our salvation works itself out into our lives only in as much as we consciously and deliberately live in the power of that salvation. One may be born with a gift for music. But that gift will not work itself out into beautiful songs unless it is recognized, cultivated, and developed through much practice. So also the gift of salvation will not work itself out into a life of obedience unless it is recognized, cultivated, and practiced through much spiritual discipline ... God works all this in us through various means. He uses the Word primarily, but also the sacraments, and prayer, and the fellowship of the saints" (Standard Bearer, vol. 78, p. 219).
